History

The Department of Industrial Design Engineering was established in 2014 and began offering undergraduate education in the 2025-2026 academic year. The undergraduate program is offered over four academic years and is designed to provide a good education for students aiming for Master's and Doctoral degrees, as well as those wishing to work in industry. Graduates of the undergraduate program receive the title of "Industrial Design Engineer". From the year it began education (2025-2026), our department will work within the scope and criteria of MÜDEK (Turkish Accreditation Agency) and strive to be accredited as soon as possible.

To apply to this department, students must have a high school diploma and have achieved a sufficient score on the centrally administered university entrance exam. In our department, the 7+1 system is applied according to Article 74 of the Provisional Clause of the Higher Education Law No. 2547, and our students undergo a workplace vocational training program in the 8th semester.

Industrial design engineering encompasses the design and production process of a new product that can be mass-produced, taking into account societal demand and market needs, and developing new ideas and concepts. For the country's economy to survive and strengthen, new ideas and their implementation are needed. One of the most important professions that will increase the number of innovative products in design activities and businesses in the country is Industrial Design Engineering.

The task of an industrial design engineer is to develop original, reliable, ergonomic, functional, environmentally friendly, and manufacturable products that can make people's lives easier. In the product design process, the industrial design engineer is responsible for preparing sketches of the new idea to be developed in accordance with the determined user group, creating three-dimensional models in a computer-aided environment, determining the materials to be used, conducting the necessary analyses, and preparing the product technical drawings to make it ready for production. Our department aims to equip industrial design engineers with all the necessary skills and characteristics throughout this process, from the formation of a new idea to its production.

With its 33-year history, Kütahya Dumlupınar University Simav Faculty of Technology, one of the most established educational institutions not only in Turkey but also in the region, has a rich educational environment in terms of workshops and laboratories. Our students, who can utilize these environments, have the opportunity to experience both traditional and new design and manufacturing technologies. Our students learn traditional design and manufacturing methods, as well as next-generation design and manufacturing techniques using 3D printers and scanners in the reverse engineering and rapid prototyping laboratories established within our department. Through project-oriented courses, they can plan and execute all stages of a product's development, from concept to implementation.

Industrial design engineers are employed in all sectors where mass production takes place, such as defense industry, aviation, space, automotive, furniture, medicine, and biomedical, etc. Graduates of the Industrial Design Engineering department possess fundamental knowledge and skills in CAD (Computer-Aided Design) and CAE (Computer-Aided Manufacturing) software use, manufacturing and material knowledge, basic design and engineering knowledge, creative and systematic thinking, technical drawing, the ability to design and develop new products, project preparation, and entrepreneurship.

Although Industrial Design Engineering is a relatively new field in our country, it is becoming an increasingly sought-after profession in various sectors thanks to developing technology.

Graduates have a very wide range of employment opportunities, and the main areas of work can be listed as follows:

- Automotive and automotive sub-industry
- Aircraft and shipbuilding industry
- Machinery manufacturing and mold industry
- Furniture industry
- Glass and ceramics industry
- Defense industry
- Foundry industry
- Biomedical and medical equipment manufacturing industry
- Public transport vehicle manufacturing industry
- Plastics technology
- Quality control and inspection companies, etc.
